Click to view full image ![]() Lorne Hyman Greene born on Febuary 12th 1915 in Ottawa Ontario Canada to Russian Jewish imagrants Daniel and Dora Greene. Lorne spent over 40 years in the entertainment industry working in radio, television, and movies. He is best know by Galactica fans as Commander Adama on Battlestar Galactica. Adama was known as a strong leader, loving father, military hero, member of the Council of the Twelve, and an outstanding role model. He played the role in the 1978 movie, the series that followed, and reprised his role in the short lived Galactica 1980. Lorne is best know for his work on the show Bonanza as the fatherly Ben Cartwright. from 1959-1973. Pa was a kind, wise, and great role model for kids of that era and those who have seen the show in syndication since. ![]() From interviews and outakes Lorne was a kind soul who was extremely dedicated to his work, family, friends. He was the best of Ben Cartwright and Commander Adama in real life. Laurette Sprang told a story of how she wasn’t invited to a function involving Galactica cast members but Lorne took her as his “date” to make sure she was included as a member of the cast. How many actors in todays world would think so much to include those who where left out? Edward James Olmos has played the role of Commander William Adama on the remake of Battlestar Galactica and has done an outstanding job filling the role once played by Lorne. But no one in my opinion can ever totally replace Lorne Greene as Adama. Lorne Green passed away on September 11th 1978 in Santa Monica, California of pneumonia at the age of 72. He is missed. May his soul rest in peace and the Lords of Kobol be with him. |
