Star Trek Legacy As requested by a fellow forum member, I will begin my reviewing career at scifiunited by reviewing Star Trek Legacy for the Xbox360. Now back when the release date was drawing near I remember reading the hype about the game and how it would be a trekkies dream come true. What turned out to be the final product was not necessarily a trekkies dream come true, but the right formula for that dream of a perfect Trek game.
Let's start with the games good points shall we?...
The first thing anyone, especially a Star Trek fan, would notice about this game is looks. Without a doubt Legacy's graphics are amazing! From the detail of the ships, I mean the colors, lettering, windows, nacelles, everything is modeled with attention to detail, to the planets, to the various anomalies you will encounter, everything looks almost perfect in terms of the Star Trek universe. On the subject of ships, the player will be glad to know that essentially every ship featured in some form of Star Trek made it into the game as well as some new classes. Another detail that adds realistic feel to Legacy are the voiceovers done by the Captains themselves! Scott Bakula, William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, and Kate Mulgrew all add to the feeling of emersion in the Star Trek universe. The dialogue on the whole is very good and the writers did a decent job tying the 15 missions together. In terms of the missions themselves all are time consuming long missions ranging from easy to insanely hard you'll have to try 4 more times to beat it. The earlier missions in the game are rather slow compared to the rest. The Archer missions All focus around seek and destroy and pretty much nothing else. Kirk's and Picard's missions really begin to a flavor to the game with rescue missions, Exploration, Diplomacy, and, a personal favorite of mine from the Kirk era, stealing the prototype for the TNG style Klingon Bird of Prey! In terms of the missions I did find two definite negatives: The inability to save during a mission and the inability to select missions. You will find yourself having to replay incredibly long missions if one thing goes wrong at the end and that gets quite frustrating. To make matters worse, in order to play say Picrad's second TNG mission, you have to play through and beat all of Archer's, all of Kirk's and Picard's first to get to it. Again can be a tad annoying, but overall the game has good construction. One thing that a player may or may not find annoying, depending on how hands on you want to be, is that the AI for the other ships in your fleet isn't the brightest. You have to manually repair them which wastes precious time while you're engaged in battle and the ships have a tendency to wander around the map getting into trouble. Be sure to either cycle through manually or pull up your map to check and see where your other ships are incase they end up in the middle of a Borg base up the creek without a paddle. Honestly the biggest issue where this game suffered was from what they promised and didn't deliver. During the "hype phase" announcements were made for upgradeable ships, customizing you ship's crew, and, most importantly, specific movie/series encounters such as the battle between Kirk and Kahn. That combined with the fact that while playing the game you have this feeling of "this game is incomplete in some way" definitely takes a little bit away from the experience. However, the game that did eventually come out is, I believe, the formula for the perfect Trek game. If they added those era specific missions, added more engaging "treklike" missions, and just polished up the system the have, they would have made every Trekkie's day! Finally we get to the multiplayer aspect. You essentially have two main modes: Death match and Coop Wave. Deathmatch is self explanatory. You get a fleet and you destroy the other guy's fleet. Coop Fleet consists of your fleet and up to three other fleets defending your shipyards from continuous enemy waves. I personally have only played coop wave, but I can say that it is pretty fun when you get a good group of people or a friend playing with you. In conclusion, Legacy falls short in a few areas that are made up for by the looks and authentic feeling you get while playing the game. If you like Star Trek or you like big space battles, it's worth checking out this game. Especially now it being like 20 or 30 bucks, it won't break your wallet either. My Rating: 8 - A Good Game Worth Checking Out Have any questions, comments, or experiences you have had with the game feel free to post. Part of these reviews for discussion and your input. - Will
