Smallville has a history of bringing in actors associated with other adaptations of the Superman comic.

In an effort to step outside of the box, actress Allison Mack has signed on to direct an episode for Smallville‘s seventh season, which is slated to premiere on September 27.

Former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Washington Joins ‘Bionic Woman’

“He’s a wonderful actor … and he became available,” Silverman said. “I started talking to him before he was available. … I didn’t have any idea — when he told me he was available, I was like ‘What? I don’t understand. You’re a star on a huge TV show.’ I didn’t quite understand what was going on there.” Silverman was referring to the now-famous incident in which Washington used a homophobic slur during an argument with fellow Grey’s Anatomy cast mate Patrick Dempsey. Under intense pressure, Washington later apologized and even made a public service announcement warning others of the power of words. But, his contract was not renewed, leaving him free to join the cast of Bionic Woman

Silverman believes that Washington’s acting ability speaks for itself, and viewers will become so involved with his character on the show that they’ll be able to leave the controversy behind. “The bottom line is he’s a wonderful actor . . . [and] that’s what I think people will respond to,” he said.

However, Agyeman does have a two-year contract with the franchise, which Davies intends to honor. She’s already scheduled for a three-episode guest spot on Torchwood, and will likely return for another three-episode storyline on Doctor Who. Though Agyeman’s character left in the third season finale, the door has been left open for her to make a reappearance at any time; however, it’s being called “highly unlikely” that she’ll be invited to return to the franchise after her contract is up.

Executive producer Russell T. Davies called Tate “an absolute star” and said he was “delighted that one of Britain’s greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth [season]. . . Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008.” Tate, meanwhile, said she was “delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to traveling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey.”

John Glover Talks ‘Smallville’

That’s one of the challenges of Smallville. I don’t think they thought it would be on this long. They kind of planned on four years, the high-school years,” said Glover. “As long as Lionel stays interesting . . . ”

He also lamented the loss of Annette O’Toole, who has played Martha Kent on the show since it’s beginnings. “I’m going to miss Martha! There’s nothing to be done… unless I write her a love letter. I don’t know if they’ll deal with it on the show but [her] contract’s up and I don’t think she’s coming back,” he said. Glover said he would especially miss the playful flirting going on between their characters. He didn’t comment on the rumors of yet another new cast member joining the show, in addition to Clark’s cousin Kara aka Supergirl. Some sources are reporting that Lois (Kristin Kreuk) will have a new love interest this season in Greg, a hunky new editor-in-chief for The Daily Planet.

Fans Prepare to Welcome Supergirl to ‘Smallville’

Meanwhile, fans are looking forward to hearing more about Kara, as evidenced by the positive chatter going on all over the web regaurding the cast addition. This is in sharp contrast to the news that two new women have joined the cast over at Supernatural, which has fans in an uproar. This may be due to the fact that Supergirl is an already-existing part of the Superman story as told in DC comics, whereas the Supernatural newbies are unknown for now.
